My Baby Ate Solids!

We've tried a few things since starting out with avocados: bananas, pears, more avocados, even some "real" baby food. Then today I gave Pearl some Fruity Booty and she liked it! It's the only thing she's had a bite of that she's wanted a second taste of. It's pretty bland; maybe that's why she likes it. Well, to me it's pretty bland, I guess at first she was just getting the fruit specks on the outside, which are pretty sweet and tangy. She wouldn't move them to her mouth on her own, though if I were holding them she would move my hand to her mouth, silly girl. Well, I guess it's not that silly, after all, my body has been her food delivery method her whole life. I feel a bit bad that the first thing she likes is essentially junk food... organic, vegetarian junk food but pretty now in the nutrition department nonetheless. I guess they're no worse than Gerber's puffs.

She's also drinking a bit of water out of her sippy cup now. Getting big.

Anya's all about the sippy cup (water) but food has still been an issue for us. She's not reacting well to the little bits she's gotten. Ah well, at least I can comfort myself with the fact that she's breastfeeding!

Yeah, my little guy is 10 months and he is just now starting to really eat stuff, and still totally reliant on the boob for sustainance. I did find that article you posted a link to earlier really helpful though, because the feeding him with a spoon really wasn't working well.

Well, it's something! Great job Pearl, growing up so fast!!

I feel better when I keep reading about others' kids not taking to solids that easily. We gave Julian some banana chunks and he had zero interest in it. For some reason I thought he'd eat it up! He didn't even want to play w/it just pushed it off the tray. He had snatched a chunk of turkey breast off my plate once a while and put it right in his mouth, I had to go in and get it...maybe that's where I need to start. I tried putting the banana on my plate and he didn't even attempt to grab at it. No foolin' him :)

When you gave Pearl pears and avocado, did you mash them up or just give her some big pear slices? I was going to try apple next but wasn't sure if a slice would be ok, I know the whole baby-led thing says it doesn't need to be mashed but I still get freaked about choking! I have one of those baby-safe feeders to put whole pieces of food in but I figured until he's really into solids that would only further deter him. Let me know what you did if you don't mind.

Mamacta... my mom told me I wasn't eating solids until 8 or 9 months and that made me feel better too. When I gave Pearl the avocadoes/pears I gave her big chunks... I worry about choking too but not a whole lot yet as she doesn't move the food towards her mouth, lol. When I was feeding her the fruit booty she would chew tiny pieces of it off. Also I read a suggestion to roll juicy stuff like pears and apples in flour of some sort... rice or oat, to make it easier for babies to hold onto.

I did try feeding her the food mashed up, once it was clear she wasn't gonna start gobbling away at the chunks, but she wasn't interested in that either.

I tried avocado again yesterday and while this time she still wouldn't move the chunks to her mouth on her own, she was willing to let me place small pieces in her mouth. She still gags a lot though - her gag reflex is really strong still I guess? She may not be *quite* ready for big people food still.

And PW, it was more like $3 a bag at the natural foods coop, of course.
